A total exterior restoration and repair, including matching the original siding, complete new front porch from the floor down, rotten soffit and fascia repair, and the list goes on and on.
One of the more fun and exciting portions was bringing back the original porch post hardware. The ornamentation was so buried under decades of paint, no one even knew it was there. I love those moments of discovery.
The joy of creating usable space out of an empty room, makes assembling a kitchen a lot of fun. Challenging but rewarding, the pieces have to fit just right. When they do, the results can be breathtaking.
I had the privilege to be involved in this project from the beginning. A number of these design elements were created on site from "napkin sketches".
Cherry cabinets, black granite countertops, turned accents, and moldings from Enkeboll made this kitchen a great exercise in problem solving.
Repairs and replacement of broken and damaged slate. The real stuff. Solid hard black Buckingham slate that should last close to 200 years. Without a doubt this is my favorite type of roof to install. I also re-flashed the chimney and made all new dormer pans out of 20 oz. sheet copper.
It was 90 plus degrees most days, and hot, heavy, grueling days on the roof. I couldn't have been happier.
Did I mention this is my favorite type of roof ?
One of the most marvelous things about a built-in piece is the unique personality of them. Built with care for a specific place, for a specific reason, and dare I say, for a specific time. Fashion and personal taste change with the seasons. One thing however never changes, the desire for personal expression in a thing of beauty.
Here are a few pieces, conceived in the clients mind, and born to see the light of many beautiful days. Enjoy! I know I did.
"Good fences, make good neighbors." This is not merely a good fence, it is a great fence. Mortised and pegged rails, six by six white oak posts, beveled top and bottom rails, certainly a great fence.
I had a lot of fun designing this fence, and even more fun building it.
Big or small, fancy or plain, additions are all about increasing your quality of life, a place to hang out, or sometime providing much needed elbow room.
Here are two very different ones that I designed and built that both have one thing in common. The homeowners were thrilled.
This house had three different kinds of siding on the exterior, which I removed. After stripping the exterior to the studs, I had a few wiring issues repaired, installed new insulation, vapor barrier, and new wood siding.
Once that was complete I designed and built a front porch using a salvaged set of posts and pickets. Matching the old with the new and making it look like it fit was a challenge, but I think it turned out well.
Nothing beat a porch or a deck for simply sitting in the shade at the end of a hot day, or the first warm rays of the sun with that first cup of coffee on a cool morning.
Here are two that I designed and built. Built for just sitting, and maybe swinging. Can't beat that.
A little here, a little there, and bit by bit the world around us becomes a better, brighter, more beautiful place.
Simply by doing what needs done.
